چکیده

Introduction The term xenobiotic (Greek xenos + bioticos, which means “strange” and “life-related” respectively) means a chemical substance that is not a natural component of a living organism exposed to it, i.e. a strange, exogenous substance or anthropogenic material. This definition covers substances strange to the target organisms, hence its use for most poisons and drugs. An important group of xenobiotics are chemical compounds produced by humans, with artificial chemical structure, to which organisms have not adjusted through prior evolution [1]. But can we always say with certainty that a given chemical structure cannot be found in the natural environment? One of the key groups of xenobiotics are aromatic compounds with chlorine substituent. At the same time, the Amblyomma americanium tick produces 2,6-dichlorophenol as pheromone and the 2,5-dichlorophenol in the same function was also found in grasshoppers [2]. Therefore, for the microorganisms the xenobiotics are generally defined as all substances with the structure with which the microorganism has had no direct contact during their evolution [1]. It should also be pointed out that not all xenobiotics are necessarily toxic [3]. Due to its structure, strange to the natural microorganism populations, xenobiotics released into the environment can linger there for months or years. However, this does not mean that those substances are never degraded, since not all anthropogenic substances are resistant to microbiological degradation. The horizontal gene transfer and other adaptive processes allow the microorganisms to participate in the transformation of xenobiotics processes.

MICROBIAL TRANSFORMATION OF CHOLESTEROL BY MYCOBACTERIUM SMEGMATIS

Mycobacterium smegmatis PTCC 1307 (CIP 73.26) was used as a microbial agent to produce androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione (ADD) and androst-4-ene-3,17-dione, two useful precursors in the synthesis of steroid drugs. The side chain of cholesterol, as the substrate, was selectively cleaved in the presence of five enzyme inhibitors. An intermediate structure with intact side chain, cholest-4-ene-3-one, ...

Fate of xenobiotics during composting

A primary concern with composting is the lack of knowledge about the fate of widely used pesticides. Also, there is increasing interest in the use of composting as a bioremediation method for soils contaminated with xenobiotics such as TNT, PCBs, chlorophenols and PAHs. We used a laboratory scale composting system to determine the extent of mineralization, incorporation into humic matter, and v...

Microbial fuel cell: a green approach for the utilization of waste for the generation of bioelectricity

Today we are witnessing a global energy crisis due to huge energy demands and limited resources. Non-renewable energy sources are depleting and renewable energy sources are not properly utilized. There is an immediate need for search of alternate routes for energy generation. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology, which uses microorganisms to transform chemical energy of organic compounds into e...

Host-microbial interactions in the metabolism of therapeutic and diet-derived xenobiotics.

Our associated microbial communities play a critical role in human health and predisposition to disease, but the degree to which they also shape therapeutic interventions is not well understood. Here, we integrate results from classic and current studies of the direct and indirect impacts of the gut microbiome on the metabolism of therapeutic drugs and diet-derived bioactive compounds. We pay p...

Molecular strategies of microbial adaptation to xenobiotics in natural environment

The unprecedented population increase and industrial development during the twentieth century has increased conventional solid and liquid waste pollutants to critical levels as well as produced a range of previously unknown strange synthetic chemicals for which society was unprepared. Increasing pollution of the environment by xenobiotic compounds has provoked the need for understanding the imp...
